Is it true that Islam has a variety of denominations?
Yes, it is true that the denominations of Islam are very variety.
When I came to the USA in 2002, most people guessed my religion is Muslim because I lived in Indonesia. Then, when I told them that I am Christian, they asked which denomination are you? Of course, I was so confused. Since I have been here, I have learned that Christianity has a lot of variety like protestant and catholic. Islam also is divided into 4 denominations:
1. Sunni
It means principle or path. In Christianity, we only read a bible. For them, they only believe one doctrine : Hadith and Muhammad is the successor. There are 4 Sunni schools : Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’I and Hanbali. This is the biggest denomination (70%).
2. Shia
It means Infallibility. They believe that the successor is Ali Ibn Ali Talib (Cousin or Son – In Law of Muhammad). This denomination is ranked second (30%). They have a branch called Twelvers and this branch has a legal tradition called Ja’fari Jurisprudence. You might find a lot of Shia in Iraq, Pakistan, India, Iran, Azebijan, Bahrain and Lebanon.
3. Sufism
They believe in experience of God by using their intuitive or emotional faculties. Their methods are very distinct from Islam.
4. Islamic Sects and minority Islam (15%)
A. Islamic Sects are believers who believe in Bidah and extreme political views which are divorced from Islam.
B. Minority Islam :
· Ahmadiyja, they only believe the teachings of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad about the final law (revival and peaceful propagation of Islam). Most of these believers, you will find in Britain and other western countries.
· Ibadi, you will find a lot of Ibadi believers in Oman, Tunisia and Algeria. They don’t regard sinful Muslims as unbelievers. They think that leaders should be chosen solely on the basis of knowledge and piety.
· Quranist, they rejected hadith and Muhammad but follow Quran as their doctrine
· Salafi, they derive teachings from original source and refusing the establishing sunni Islam.
